The lid over the five senses, to the depth OSX allows.

DARK

A menu-bar app for Apple-Silicon Macs that turns off Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Location, Camera, and Microphone — and is honest about how deep each switch reaches.

Most privacy apps make a toggle look like a toggle whether it cuts power, flips a setting, or just watches. DARK draws the line at what is actually true.

The five senses — and the honest depth

Sense What "off" does Depth
Wi-Fi radio powered down (CoreWLAN / networksetup) real cut
Bluetooth controller powered off (bundled blueutil) real cut
Location no separate radio — cutting Wi-Fi blinds it derived
Camera blocked, never falsely "off" (the LED is hardwired) policy
Microphone muted (device stays energized) — the true cut is the lid policy

The truth DARK never hides: on macOS you cannot power off the camera or microphone in software. DARK blocks them and says so. The only true off for those is the lid (which physically disconnects the mic) or a kernel you own.

Install

  1. Download DARK.dmg.
  2. Open it, drag DARK into Applications.
  3. First launch: right-click ▸ Open (one time — DARK isn't notarized yet).
  4. appears in your menu bar. Click it.

Self-contained: one native binary + the bundled blueutil. No Python, no Homebrew, nothing to install. Apple-Silicon, macOS 13+.

Use

  • Menu bar: click → toggle any sense, Go dark, or Open all senses.
  • Command line (the same binary):
DARK status # the true state of all five
    DARK dark # veil all
    DARK toggle wifi
    DARK set microphone off

Build from source

bash build_app.sh # → DARK.app (swiftc; Command Line Tools, no Xcode)
bash deploy/make_dmg.sh # → DARK.dmg (branded drag-to-Applications installer)

What it is — and isn't

DARK orchestrates the operating system's own controls. It never claims a cut it cannot make. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are genuine power-downs; everything else is labelled by its true depth. For a guarantee against any actor — including a compromised OS — close the lid.
